San Roque ’19 Poster

The Origins

    In July 2019, I was asked by the local government of Macotera (Salamanca, Spain) to design the poster for this year’s festive holidays, which took place in August, the famous “San Roque” holidays.

   It was a very grateful project due to the personal feelings that link me to this village, as it’s my family’s hometown. 

The Challenge

It was a challenge not just professionally, because I needed to show the village traditions in a different, more colorful and innovative way; but because they were a lot of feelings involved.
 
On three levels, popular elements were placed. At the base, the poppies intermingled with wheat and the “charro” button, typical ornament of the Salamanca culture, and symbol of the land.
 
Next the saint, San Roque, transcendental sphere superimposed to the traditional one. And surrounding him in a smaller size, the carnal festivities: the bull, the music with the “dulzaina”, the dance of the “charrá”…  identity of these festivities.
 
In conclusion, it seeks to represent all aspects of those days, with its people and its moments, from the most intimate to those that are celebrated in company.

The Final Outcome

     The reception of the image was amazing at every level, and I can’t be glad enough for being considered for this project which, somehow, was the start of gorreato’s image, as it’s the name of the birds represented at the poster.
