“Fem Pinya”

Roots of Catalonian Human Towers

Casteller’s competition

The Context

If there’s anything that represents Catalonia’s culture is the deep-rooted tradition of “Els Castellers”. These human towers, constructed with all-age people, are a symbol of tradition worldwide. Together with Visyon and the Cataluña Experience team, we worked on a 360º video documentary to highlight the value of this beautiful heritage.

The Development

In addition to the 360º video, we recreated some immersive motion graphic scenes, to illustrate the documentary.

One of the most fun and satisfying parts was to represent each of the “collas” (the groups of people who get together to create the castells).

In green, members of “Vilafranca’s Colla” , building up the human tower

Each one of the groups is traditionally represented with the colors of their shirts.

In addition, we add different ages to symbolize the oldest and the youngest, since it is also a tradition in which people of all ages participate.

The Outcome

A 360º scene, illustrated and animated with Adobe Illustrator & After Effects, integrated in the immersive documentary space, along other motion graphics for explaining how the “castells” are created, the parts of it, jobs of each one of the components.

The Complete Documentary

Tradition and technique combine to create one of the most spectacular cultural expressions in the world, considered part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by the UNESCO: Human Tower (Castellers).
Discover the secrets  and feel the emotion of the Tarragona Human Tower Competition with the best teams, held every two years. One of the main attractions of this event is the fact that it is the only day of the season that all the towers are scored on difficulty. This fact means that the leading teams compete against each other for first place in the final classification.
